Summary

Teach children about two extraordinary events in history when the God of the Bible proved himself to be the one true God。

Kids today are faced with a huge range of different views on who God is (or isn’t)。 How can they be sure who’s got it right?

This beautifully illustrated hardback storybook for children aged 3-6 is written by the team behind The Garden, the Curtain and the Cross。 It retells two extraordinary events in history when the God of the Bible proved himself to be the one true God。

First it takes children back to Elijah’s time and the gripping “God contest” between the God of the Bible, Yahweh, and the false god Baal。 Then it fast-forwards to a different mountain and another “God contest” at an empty tomb。

Once the evidence is examined, it invites kids, in a world of so many options, to decide with confidence to join Team Jesus。

One of our favorites in the series。 My boys (4 and 6) stayed glued to it the whole time。 I love the illustrations and the message was great!

This book combines the incident between Elijah and the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel and the crucifixion of Jesus on Mount Zion。 In Elijah’s day, Yahweh clearly won “the God contest - a challenge to find out who the real God us。” More than even sending down fire in Elijah’s day, Yahweh did something even more amazing in sending His own Son who decisively won “a final God contest” by rising from the dead。 “Now lots of people said…Jesus is Yahweh, Jesus is God!” Given that this book is geared f This book combines the incident between Elijah and the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel and the crucifixion of Jesus on Mount Zion。 In Elijah’s day, Yahweh clearly won “the God contest - a challenge to find out who the real God us。” More than even sending down fire in Elijah’s day, Yahweh did something even more amazing in sending His own Son who decisively won “a final God contest” by rising from the dead。 “Now lots of people said…Jesus is Yahweh, Jesus is God!” Given that this book is geared for young children ages 3-6, I’m not sure all children this age are ready to hear lines like these: “Most people didn’t know which God to believe in。 Maybe Baal was the real God。 Maybe Yahweh was。 Maybe both of them were。 Maybe neither of them were… How could they decide?” Obviously, this book goes on to show that only Yahweh is the real God, but parents will have to decide when and how to introduce their children to the doubts and false beliefs of others。 This book is a part of the Tales that Tell the Truth series for young children (ages 3-6) from The Good Book Company。 This series is among my absolute favorites for my little kiddos。 。。。more

(5☆ Would recommend & would read again)Such a cute book。 Great pictures and such a good storyline。 I love how this story ties in the story of Elijah to Jesus & how it ties in the hearts of the Israelites to the hearts of people today。

I'm not going to rate this book because I'm not religious (and Christianity is my least favorite religion) and I only read this book for the illustrations。 Though I did find it interesting they decided to make Jesus dying on the cross a competition when that wasn't even remotely close to what happened。。。 but okay。The illustrations are fun though I'm not going to rate this book because I'm not religious (and Christianity is my least favorite religion) and I only read this book for the illustrations。 Though I did find it interesting they decided to make Jesus dying on the cross a competition when that wasn't even remotely close to what happened。。。 but okay。The illustrations are fun though 。。。more

What a fun re-telling of Elijah and the prophets of Baal! I loved how Laferton ties that story to how people now doubt God's existence because they "forgot" the mighty things he's done。 A great way to help children (and the adults who read to them) remember who God is! Like the other's in this series, this is great! I don't see the story of Elijah calling down fire from heaven as often in children's books, so I immediately loved it for that reason!the illustrations were beautiful as always and the message is great and palatable for children。 Like the other's in this series, this is great! Idol worshipers and prophet face-off to call out GOD, Bar-B-Q, some believe。 God comes to Earth as a man, dies, rises again, some believe。 Colorful。

I have loved every single book in this series, and this one is no exception。 Clever, artful, and clearly biblical。

This is a retelling of 1 Kings 18:16-40, the true story of Elijah on Mt。 Carmel, challenging the prophets of Baal to a "contest" of seeing Who is the real God, Yahweh vs。 Baal。 The line is drawn and there are two teams, which one is the real God? Who wins? The illustrations are engaging and emphasize the author's main points。 I love how readers are led from Mount Carmel to Mount Zion, to read of another "God contest", that of Jesus。 And as is mentioned earlier in the book as well as at the end, This is a retelling of 1 Kings 18:16-40, the true story of Elijah on Mt。 Carmel, challenging the prophets of Baal to a "contest" of seeing Who is the real God, Yahweh vs。 Baal。 The line is drawn and there are two teams, which one is the real God? Elijah competes in a showdown against the prophets of Baal。 Some turn to the true God, but some still do not believe。 The story continues by showing how Jesus defeated sin and death in a showdown, and now everyone must choose- do you believe in the real God?

A picture book retelling of the contest between Elijah and the prophets of Baal, and how people then and now have miracles which demonstrate which God is the true God but they must still decide who to follow。Another great Bible story retelling which helps kids see not only the main point of that Bible story but also how it ultimately ties into the story of Jesus。 Fantastic wording for kids to easily grasp things, and superbly done illustrations。 Highly recommended to Christian families and schoo A picture book retelling of the contest between Elijah and the prophets of Baal, and how people then and now have miracles which demonstrate which God is the true God but they must still decide who to follow。Another great Bible story retelling which helps kids see not only the main point of that Bible story but also how it ultimately ties into the story of Jesus。 Fantastic wording for kids to easily grasp things, and superbly done illustrations。 Highly recommended to Christian families and schools。 。。。more

I should read with a child before a review。 I would love to hear the questions asked。 In some ways it seemed rushed and some parts I would want to interject but I am looking at it with adult eyes。 I found no untruths! That is important!

Loved this book about the stand-off between Elijah and the prophets of Baal。 Appreciate Laferton’s emphasis on sharing faith today。

After reading this through a few times I actually like it more than I did the first or second time through。 My boys also both really connected with it as it is one of our favorite OT accounts。 My guys liked the idea of the teams which put me off at first reading myself。 The fact is, either you ARE on team God or you are not。 There is no middle ground。 The artwork was lovely as it always is in this book series。 The two page spread with some of the great Believers of history is wonderful!

A wonderful book with fantastic illustrations。 It clearly relates the story of Elijah and connects everything to Jesus。

AMAZING。 Such rich theology packed into a book for kids。 This series continues to blow me away。

I have loved every book in this series, and The God Contest knocks it out of the park again。 The illustrations are hilarious and interesting, and I love how the author was able to connect a really interesting Old Testament story with the Gospel。 Brilliant! We read a digital review copy of this and my boys were hanging over my shoulder the whole time, enjoying it immensely。

Another great book for kids and adults alike in the Tales That Tell the Truth series。 Captivating artwork and a retelling of a Bible story in a way that points to Jesus。 Plus it doesn't shy away from the part where Elijah asks if the false god is going to the bathroom。 Another great book for kids and adults alike in the Tales That Tell the Truth series。 Captivating artwork and a retelling of a Bible story in a way that points to Jesus。 Plus it doesn't shy away from the part where Elijah asks if the false god is going to the bathroom。 。。。more

I had to read this book twice to review it properly。 SUMMARYThis book links Elijah's Mt Carmel contest to Jesus Mt Calvary contest。 THE GOODI think this is the most freedom Catalina has had to draw。 There are some cool double-vertical pages that showcase some of this neat art。 It's also fun。 My kids laughed during this book more than any other book in the series, consistently。Can I get a poster of the list of popular saints throughout history that ends the book? It's great。 THE CHALLENGE I had to read this book twice to review it properly。 SUMMARYThis book links Elijah's Mt Carmel contest to Jesus Mt Calvary contest。 THE GOODI think this is the most freedom Catalina has had to draw。 There are some cool double-vertical pages that showcase some of this neat art。 It's also fun。 My kids laughed during this book more than any other book in the series, consistently。Can I get a poster of the list of popular saints throughout history that ends the book? It's great。 THE CHALLENGESTo be honest, the reason I had to read it twice was because of the book's focus on teams, especially by the end。 Team Jesus and joining the team and team this and team that after this past year I see in a whole different light, but that might just be me。 Again, that's why I reread it。This book was written by the same author who wrote The Garden, the Curtain and the Cross which is one of the best books in this series。 I don't feel the flow of the words (or the wording choice) was nearly as good。 It's an okay read, but there's not anything "fantastical" like I expect with kids books。The Jesus tie-in isn't great either。 This hurts because I expected this part of the book but it feels forced。 I love this series and secondguess myself a lot, but seriously, it's forced。 The things, objects, parallels, etc between these two stories of Elijah and Jesus just aren't connective enough to make a good segue。 CONCLUSIONThere are so many stories that better link to Jesus and his work (since that's the focus of the series) and this one wasn't a great one to pick, imo。 Unfortuntely, this review places it as the worst book in this series。 However, I've spent most of my time comparing this book to other better books in this series。 But it's still a good book to read to your kids and have compared to most of the other kids books out there。 Three stars。 。。。more

Good News! The Team Jesus page- has a whole host of people pictured and their names are under their pictures, a whole history of famous believers-so much possibility! What I wonder:the fun font will not be the best choice for all readers- with some letters bold, others not, and some different sized letters。 Not sure who would be affected by this。 Will kids recognize the Emu's in the contest on the opening pages, my oldest says that it what it is, and it really caught his attention。 Will it be fun for all? a distraction。 Thankful to be provided a beautiful hardback copy of the book with durable pages, great size for a read aloud book by the goodbook company to review。 。。。more
